Interpreting IEPs: A Practical Lab for Trilinguals

About the Event: This course will be taught by Celena Ponce, a trilingual interpreter with her NIC and Certificate of Professional Interpreting in Special Education. This workshop is for trilingual interpreters.
This 2-hour interactive workshop is designed for trilingual interpreters who work across ASL, English, and Spanish. Participants will gain practical experience interpreting in mock IEP (Individualized Education Program) meetings, building the skills and confidence needed to navigate these complex educational settings.
- By the end of the workshop, participants will have:
- Increase Knowledge
- Understand the structure and purpose of an Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting.
- Recognize the roles of educators, service providers, parents, and students in the IEP process.
- Develop Practical Skills
- Practice interpreting in English ⇆ ASL ⇆ Spanish within an IEP meeting context.
- Apply strategies for handling technical terms, educational jargon, and cultural nuances.
- Build Confidence
- Gain experience in a safe, supportive environment with mock IEP meetings.
- Receive constructive feedback to strengthen interpreting performance.
- Foster Professional Growth
- Learn best practices for working with Deaf students and multilingual families in school settings.
- Develop readiness to work effectively in real-world IEP meetings.
