Accessible Media Services

What are accessible media services?

Accessible media services refer to making visual materials accessible to a wider audience. Inclusive Communication Services offers three services, Picture-in-Picture Sign language Interpreting, Captioning, and Audio Description to help your company become more inclusive! Utilizing one or more of these services can result in accessible training videos, company announcements, performances, seminars, orientations, conference sessions, advertising campaigns and more!

What accessible media services does Inclusive Communications Services offer?

  1. Picture-in-Picture (PIP) Sign Language Interpreting

Picture-in-Picture (PIP) sign language interpreting involves inserting a small box into your company’s videos in which a sign language interpreter will appear. Customize your interpretation with a hand-picked interpreter, a variety of backgrounds, and multiple target sign languages to localize your content to any country or region!

All of our PIP interpreters are screened and specially selected based on their resumes/skillsets for your materials. You just send your media to ICS and we’ll send back the finished product!

  2. Captioning

One of the most efficient ways to make your materials accessible to a wider audience is to add captions, also known as subtitles. Many individuals and communities benefit from captioned content, including but not limited to the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community, individuals who became deaf later in life and rely on written English, and those who wish to watch your content without sound. Given the immense benefit of having captioned content, this is becoming a standard practice, and justly so. As one ICS blog author put it, please add captions to your content! While it is true that many platforms offer automatic captioning, it is important to utilize a human service when considering accessibility. Automatic captions use an algorithm that isn’t familiar with foreign accents, false starts, strange words, or stutters, which can make for a transcript riddled with errors. For more information about the advantages of using a captioning service as opposed to automatic captioning, check out our previous blog entitled Automated Captioning – Is It Really Accessible?

ICS handles all the technical side of things. You simply send us the materials you’d like made accessible and we’ll return your video with embedded, accurate captions done by a human, always!

  3. Audio DescriptionThis refers to taking visual information and translating it into an audio track, which is then played synonymously during your media content. There are both standard voiceovers, where the track runs continuously for the entire video or presentation, as well as extended, where the description is detailed enough to require ICS to add pauses into your media. This service is most often utilized to provide access for individuals who are blind or have low vision.

Why should you make your materials accessible?

Accessible media accommodations are an affordable way to expand your viewer audience while demonstrating your commitment to inclusion and equal access. By making your materials accessible, you minimize moments of isolation and turn them into opportunities for inclusion! Whether it be an advertisement for a new product, a conference session for your archives, or a promotional video for social media, we have your accessibility needs covered.
